Preparing patients extends beyond assessing their clinical suitability. It requires multiple conversations with them, their carers, and family members to prepare everyone for the process and the potential toxicities that accompany such a novel treatment. For many people living with myeloma, their benchmark for an inpatient treatment period is a stem cell transplant, which is, of course, a completely different experience. Interestingly, some patients who have received both treatments were surprised by how much easier CAR-T was physically. There was a lot of excitement among patients around CAR-T. During our monthly patient support group meetings, it became a frequent topic of discussion, so we dedicated a couple of sessions to CAR-T.
