Reference ranges in place for sFLC were those quoted by the manufacturer (The Binding Site) based on a 2002 study. Literature evidence from the last few years has indicated that measured sFLC results have drifted to higher values. In addition, it is known that sFLC accumulate in renal impairment, therefore reference ranges are expected to vary by the chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage. The iStopMM study in Iceland had recently published their own reference ranges for sFLC, which we thought might be a better reflection of current sFLC results, and crucially also included both age- and CKD stage-specific ranges.
