Module 5 – Treatment for myeloma
Summary of module
This module describes the treatment of myeloma. It includes an overview of the treatments available for newly diagnosed patients, options at relapse and what can be done for those who are refractory. Current recommendations for maintenance/consolidation treatment are also discussed. High-dose therapy and stem cell transplant treatment is covered separately in Module 6.
Myeloma can be treated effectively but cannot be cured. Treatment is aimed at enhancing patient survival and maximising quality of life.
The course of the disease and its treatment are characterised by chronic and acute symptomatic episodes. Nursing management is therefore challenging and nursing goals may vary and change over time, requiring ongoing assessment, evaluation and review.
Discussions and decisions about treatment should always involve the patient, and nurses have an important role to play in facilitating this. Nurses have a pivotal role in educating patients about treatment choices, potential side effects of treatment and ensuring patients are involved in the decision-making process.
The management of treatment-related side effects together with the treatment and management of the complications of myeloma are covered in more detail in Module 7. New and emerging treatments are covered in Module 8.
Note that as we are in an exciting time of evolving myeloma treatment approvals and availability, this module is correct at the time of writing and new treatments may become available prior to module updates. Please follow the News section of the Myeloma HCP Hub or our main site for the most up-to-date information.
