Proteasome Inhibitors

Proteasome inhibitors (PI) work by preventing the work of proteasomes, which are structures within cells that degrade damaged or unwanted protein. Myeloma cells accumulate a lot of excess protein and without it’s removal the cell dies. Bortezomib (Velcade®) and carfilzomib (Kyprolis®) are the two most commonly used proteasome inhibitor drugs for the treatment of myeloma.
