Module 8 – Management of disease and treatment-related symptoms and complications in myeloma

Summary of module

This module explores the main strategies in the management of the symptoms and complications associated with myeloma and the side effects that may arise from treatment.

Myeloma can affect the body in many different ways and the complications that develop can become complex and challenging for both patients and the healthcare team. Even during remission periods, patients may continue to experience poor health or reduced quality of life due to the long-term effects of certain complications. Treatment for myeloma can also cause a number of debilitating side effects that require attentive management. This includes a range of healthcare professionals including haematologists, specialist nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, psychologists, radiologists, and palliative care teams, with nurses providing essential coordination. Their close, continuous patient contact enables early recognition of symptoms and complications and ensures that management is timely, consistent, and integrated across disciplines, supporting truly holistic care for people with myeloma.

Note: the content of this educational module is intended to support professional development and should not replace local clinical guidance or individual clinical judgment. Treatment recommendations, drug approvals, and available regimens differ across regions and may change over time. Users are responsible for consulting local regulations, prescribing information, and institutional protocols before implementing any clinical approach discussed in this programme.
