Module 9 – Myeloma Bone Disease

Summary of module

This module focuses on the causes, impact and treatment of myeloma bone disease.  It reviews the imaging techniques used to detect and monitor bone disease, describes the use of bisphosphonates in myeloma and outlines options for surgical and non-surgical management.

Complications of myeloma bone disease are a major cause of morbidity, mortality and impaired quality of life. Even in remission, the long-term sequelae of skeletal-related related events can continue to have a negative impact on patients.

Nurses play a crucial role in recognising and understanding the effect that myeloma bone disease can have on patients and to help them maximise their quality of life.

Note: the content of this educational module is intended to support professional development and should not replace local clinical guidance or individual clinical judgment. Treatment recommendations, drug approvals, and available regimens differ across regions and may change over time. Users are responsible for consulting local regulations, prescribing information, and institutional protocols before implementing any clinical approach discussed in this programme.
