IMWG consensus of second primary malignancies in myeloma
In recent years, significant therapeutic advancements in the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), particularly through autologous stem cell transplantation and the introduction of novel agents, have markedly improved patient outcomes and life expectancy. However, this increased longevity raises important concerns regarding the long-term risk of second primary malignancies (SPMs) among these patients.
This paper, written by members of the International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG), presents a comprehensive review of the current understanding of host-, disease-, and treatment-related risk factors associated with the development of SPMs in MM patients.
It also offers practical recommendations to guide healthcare professionals in addressing this critical aspect of patient care. A panel of experts from the IMWG conducted a thorough literature review, synthesising data from key publications and presentations at major oncology and haematology conferences up to June 2016.
