The annual UK Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS) meeting, held in Manchester on 15–16 November 2024, brought together over 800 oncology nurses from across the UK to network and hear about the latest developments in cancer nursing. Myeloma UK are regular contributors and attendees to this annual meeting, striving to increase awareness and knowledge of myeloma amongst cancer nurses who work across haematology oncology.

Exploring implementation of best practice recommendations

Myeloma UK’s Clinical Practice Programme Manager, Monica Morris, presented a poster on the Myeloma UK Clinical Service Excellence Programme (CSEP). Entitled ‘Implementing recommendations for best practice in myeloma care: an evaluation of UK hospitals’ the poster, described analysis of recommendations for service improvement made through the CSEP programme.

Selected as one of the best abstracts of UKONS 2024, Monica was also awarded a slot in the oral presentations of the plenary session on the first day of conference.

This presentation was a great opportunity to showcase the work of Myeloma UK with a national audience of nurses and give a real-world example of how the third sector can work with hospitals towards ‘positive change in cancer care’ – the theme of this year’s UKONS conference.

Commitment to continued improvements in excellence

The presentations focused on analysis of the recommendations made to hospitals who had achieved CSEP accreditation during 2017–2019 and reaccredited during 2022–2024, and looked at the percentage of recommendations the hospitals had implemented.

The findings offer insight into the barriers to implementation, as well as improving understanding of the initiatives and resources required by hospitals to support improvement. This will better guide future recommendation setting to support hospitals in achieving excellence.
