At Myeloma UK, we’re committed to ensuring that everyone affected by myeloma receives the highest standard of care regardless of where they live. Through the Clinical Service Excellence Programme (CSEP), we work alongside hospitals across the UK to support development, share best practice and recognise teams delivering outstanding, patient-centred care.

Since our last update in April, we’re delighted to share that four more hospitals have achieved accreditation and another hospital has successfully reaccredited.

Our accredited network continues to grow and is suitable for hospitals of all sizes – from district generals to large teaching hospitals.

Celebrating the newest accredited hospitals

Frimley Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital, Surrey

A particularly impressive aspect of the service at Frimley Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital is the work the team has undertaken to embed a comprehensive toxicity assessment process within the electronic systems. Functioning effectively as an ePROM, this integration enables patients to report symptoms prior to their planned treatments, providing the clinical team with timely, actionable information to guide shared decision-making and the onward care pathway.

The system also supports patients in recognising and reporting side effects to help them feel more informed, confident, and actively involved in their care. This structured digital approach standardises toxicity monitoring, which ultimately improves patient safety and overall experience across the treatment pathway.

Lincoln County Hospital

At Lincoln County Hospital, the myeloma team have a clear focus on continuous patient-focused service improvement, which was clearly demonstrated by the introduction of an annual myeloma patient experience survey. This survey gives patients an opportunity to express what is going well, as well as aspects of care that could be improved.

The results are fed back to the myeloma MDT and Haematology Clinical Governance team, and several changes to the service have been made in response to feedback. This shows that the team proactively listens to and acts upon the needs of patients, and means that the needs of people living with myeloma really do drive service innovation and change.

The London Clinic

A key strength of the service at The London Clinic is the high-quality, holistic care for patients and their families. The team place a particularly strong emphasis on supporting the psychological wellbeing of patients and their families throughout the myeloma pathway.

Psychological needs are routinely assessed from the point of diagnosis, throughout treatment, at relapse, and where appropriate, during end-of-life care. A collaborative, multidisciplinary approach ensures that emotional and mental health concerns are identified early and addressed promptly, and staff are trained in recognising signs of psychological distress. Key to this is the comprehensive support from the myeloma CNSs who act as a consistent point of contact, ensuring individuals feel supported at every stage of their myeloma journey.

Celebrating reaccreditations

Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

Specialist physiotherapy provision continues to be a clear highlight of the service at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. At its initial accreditation in 2022, the team had successfully introduced a dedicated myeloma physiotherapist, Emily Mean. Emily’s role was to promote mobility and optimise patients’ fitness prior to treatment, as well as provide support for patients with spinal bone disease.

The service has gone from strength to strength, with the introduction of a weekly exercise class which not only improves physical fitness but provides valuable peer support for patients. Building on this success, and as a way of offering psychological support, the CNS team at Basingstoke have created a ‘Myeloma Walk and Talk’ session which combines exercise with mental wellbeing and peer support.

Raising standards together

Each of these hospitals has demonstrated clinical excellence across the board to achieve accreditation or reaccreditation. These achievements support our mission to champion high-quality, patient-centred myeloma care, wherever patients live and wherever your hospital is based in the UK.
