CSEP Process
Learn more about the process to become a CSEP accredited hospital
There are six key steps to becoming a CSEP-accredited hospital.
Step one: initial application
The initial application is a brief form which asks about the key details of the hospital. We also
request details for a lead contact for the CSEP process.
After reviewing your application, the CSEP team will contact you with more information about next steps.
Step two: self-assessment
The online self-assessment questions are based on each of the ten themes in the Myeloma Best Practice Standards.
The online self-assessment can be saved and returned to as many times as needed before it is submitted.
To be accredited, a hospital is required to be:
- Compliant in all themes
- Excellent in at least seven themes
- An overall rating of Excellent
Step three: patient experience surveys
We require between 20-50 patient experience surveys which can be completed online or on paper.
The surveys are intended to provide evidence of the patient experience and to confirm
findings of the self-assessment. The questions align with the Myeloma Best Practice
Standards. There is also a free-text comments box. Patients are asked to consent to their
comments being shared back with the hospital.
To ensure that our services are inclusive and accessible to everyone, patients are also asked to complete ethnicity, gender and age information. Completion is
optional and anonymous.
Step four: meeting with Myeloma UK
The meeting with Myeloma UK is intended to clarify any queries from the self-assessment or
patient experience surveys. At the meeting, which is held online or in person, you can expand
on areas of the service you are particularly proud of, including potential topics to share with other hospitals through our shared practice stories.
We also discuss areas of service delivery the hospital feel would benefit from review,
improvement or increased resource to improve patients’ experience.
The meeting should be attended by at least one consultant and one clinical nurse specialist
from the haematology or myeloma team.
Step five: final report/action plan
Accreditation is awarded when the hospital has passed the above assessments. A CSEP report is sent to the myeloma team, which includes scoring from the self-assessment, highlights and recommendations, and patient experience survey results.
If the hospital has not reached the standard for CSEP accreditation, the CSEP team will write an action plan detailing next steps. The timeframes of the action plan will be discussed and agreed with the myeloma team.
Step six: award presentation
The CSEP process is completed with the presentation of an accreditation plaque or
reaccreditation certificate at the hospital site.
Wherever possible, we will work with your hospital’s communications team to help publicise your achievement.
Step seven: ongoing collaboration with Myeloma UK
Following accreditation, we may ask you or a member of your team to collaborate with Myeloma UK. This may include being a speaker in webinars for other healthcare professionals or patient InfoDays, joining one of our panels or working groups, or reviewing resources for patients and healthcare professionals. These activities are entirely optional and are not a part of the accreditation process.
Step eight: reaccreditation
After four years, the CSEP team will be back in touch regarding a reaccreditation of your service.

Can my hospital repeat the patient experience survey before reaccreditation?
Yes. Hospitals can repeat the survey between accreditations. We suggest completing it halfway through the accreditation cycle. We can provide both paper and online versions, and collate the results for you.
Should I update Myeloma UK on any changes to the service in between accreditations?
Yes. Patients can provide feedback on accredited hospitals through our website, so please let us know about any service changes that may affect patient experience. This helps us understand and respond to any feedback we receive. Examples include key staff leaving, or Trust or Health Board mergers.
What happens if a hospital does not meet the standard for CSEP accreditation?
If the hospital has not reached the required standard for CSEP accreditation, the CSEP
team will propose an action plan that is discussed and agreed with the myeloma team.
This is not publicised.
