The Sarah Henshaw Award for Clinical Excellence

Recognising hospital teams for excellence in patient-centred myeloma care

About the award

Created in memory of the late Sarah Henshaw, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, this annual award recognises a hospital team whose work reflects the compassion, generosity, and commitment to patient-centred care that defined Sarah’s career.

Presented as part of the Clinical Service Excellence Programme (CSEP), the award is made to one of the hospitals that completed CSEP accreditation in the previous year. Hospitals are awarded for high-quality clinical practice, thoughtful service improvements, and innovative approaches to myeloma care.

Why Royal Berkshire Hospital was recognised

Improving care across the pathway

The team introduced multi-stakeholder myeloma service meetings that review the full patient pathway and identify practical ways to improve the experience of care.

Patient involvement in action

Patients are included in service improvement discussions. In response to this, the Myeloma CNS co-produces a twice-yearly patient newsletter with input from the local myeloma support group.

A strong commitment to holistic care

Patients undergoing stem cell transplant have access to prehabilitation and rehabilitation services that include psychological, physical, practical, and social support.
